Layer List
Back to OpenJUMP List of Functions
The Layer List provides two menu, one for the single layer and the second for the categories
LAYER MENU
To access to the Layer Menu left click on a layer displayed on the Layer List
The menu maybe change depending the type of layer (Dataset, Raster or WMS layer)

The first raw on the menu is the layer name.
Users can change the name double clicking on the layer in the Layer List and writing a new name.
- Editable
If enabled, this function allows to edit a selected layer and opens the Editing Toolbox
- Zoom to Layer
Zoom to the extension of a selected layer
- Change Style…
This function allows Users to modify the displayed style of a layer. See Uwe Dalluege – OpenJUMP Tutorila (basics) – page 20 to 24 how to use Change Style tool.
- Copy Style
This function copies the style of a slected layer
- Paste Style
It pastes the style to a selected layer
- View/Edit Attributes
View/Edit attributes tools allows to access to attribute window of a layer: See Uwe Dalluege, OpenJUMP Tutorial, page 19, “Editing Attributes”
- View/Edit Schema
This functions provides the access to the Schema Window where Users can add, remove and rename attributes. OpenJUMP Tutorila, page 18, “Editing Schema”
- Image Layer Manager
This function opens a window where Users can add images and inspect image metadata
- Refresh Layer
Refresh the view of a selected layer
- Save Selected Dataset
This function allows to save all selected datasets
- Save legend
Users can save the Legend (the Layer List with the attribute style) to a JPG or PNG raster file.
- Save Dataset as file…
Save the selected layer on the Task Window (Project Window) to a file. This function can be used to convert a file from one type to another.
This function allows to save a file to a PostGIS or other database, if related drivers are installed
- Save Dataset as…
Save the selected layer on the Task Window (Project Window) to a file. This function can be used to convert a file from one type to another.
- Move Layer up
Move the selected layer one level up in the Layer View
- Move Layer down
Move the selected layer on level down in the Layer View
- Cut Selected Layers
Cut selected layers off from the Layer List and Layer View
- Copy Selected Layers
Copy selected layers both from Layer List and Layer View
- Remove Selected Layers
Remove selected ayers both from Layer List and Layer View
- Add New Features
User are promted to a new windows where they can add new features to current layer
User can add new feature in Well Known Text (WKT) syntax. See also VIVID SOLUTION, Workbench User’s Guide, Well-Known Text Syntax, page 49
- Past items
Past items in a selected layer. You can use this function either to move items to another layer or to duplicate items in the same layer
TIP: To duplicate items in the same layer, users can copy selected items, then move them to another position using the “Move Selected Items Tools” on the Editing Tool (see Tool Function>Editing Tool, then paste new items to the original position._
- Delete all Features
Delete all features in a selected layer
- Select Current Layer Items
Select all the features from a selected layer
- Toogle Visibility
Hide selected layers in the Layer View. This function is also available unchecking the box near the layer in the Layer List
- Layer Properties (OpenJUMP Nightly build). This feature will display layer information such as name, number of features, number of points, number of attributes, geometry type, DataSource class, and orks on single or multiple layer selections. It also includes a transparency adjustment slider that works for layer selections.
CATEGORY MENU
A category is a folder where Users can group layers.
Some analisys tools in OpenJUMP can create castegories. See also VIVID SOLUTION – Jump Workbench User’s Guide for a comòete description of Categories
To access to the Category Menu left click on the selected category

To change the Category name double click on it in the Layer List
- Add a new Layer
This functions add a new empty layer to the Workbrench. The new layer is already editable (see Layer List>Editable) and can be modified adding new objects and attribute. New layers must be saved in order not to loose modifications.
- Load Dataset(s)...
Add a geometry, attribute data or data files to the Task Windows. When you click the Load Dataset(s)..., a file browser opens. Navigate to the folder where the data files are located. You can select more than one file at a time by holding down the Shift or Ctrl keys when you click on the file names.
Openjump natively support these file formats:
JML (OpenJUMP GML)
GML
WKT
SHP
FME GML
Other file formats (DXF, CVS, PostGIS and Oracle datastores) can be opened using external plugins.
See also VIVID SOLUTION – Jump Workbench User’s Guide.
In the section Import Export File Users can find interesting information about import and expot raster and vector files using external software or plugins
- Load Dataset(s)as file…
This functions acts like Load Dataset(s)
- Add Datastore Layer…
This function allows to connect to a datastore layer. On the Add Datastore Query Windows it is possible to specify some function and define the connection and the drivers. A read-only PostGIS driver is embedded in Openjump base software. Other database plugins can be downloaded in the Openjump External Plugin web page
- Add a WMS query
This function opens a new windows where users can connect OpenJUMP to a WMS (Web Map Service) layer. WMS produces maps of spatially referenced data dynamically from geographic information, usually the maps have a raster format, like JPG, PNG or GIF, sometimes in a vector SVG format. In the new windows users can write a new URL address of WMS
The WMS windows shows DEEGREE WMS which is actually deactivated. User can search WMP pages on Internet (they usually have a .wms or .cgi extensions).
For beginners, use NASA image database: http://wms.jpl.nasa.gov/wms.cgi
: TIP: if you want to save all the WMS you use you can create a text file in Openjump directory and save all the URLs in it.
By the time you want to connect to a specific WMS,copy its URL from the TXT file to the clipboard (CTRL+C in Windows) and past it (CTRL+C in Windows)in the Openjump URL space in the Add a WMS query window
- Add Image Layer (ecw deactivated)
This function opens a raster layer. Openjump currently support these raster format: .GIF, .PNG, .JPG, .TIF, and .TIFF . ECW support is deactivated.
Add Image Layer function doesn’t support the trasparency. To have this function download PIROL raster plugin (download two files: baseclass.jar and rasterimage.jar and put them in the OpenJUMP/LIB/EXT folder)
TIP: (For Windows Users) If you want to open ECW raster image with embedded Add Image Layer, find on Internet ER Mapper ECW drivers (NcsCnet.dll,NCSEcw.dll and NCSUtil.dll) and copy them in OpenJUMP/LIB/EXT folder.
Those files can be find on the ER Mapper web page
as a part of Image Compression SDK. Read licence for details.
See also OpenJUMP Raster Plugins”:http://openjump.org/wiki/show/Plugins for other possibilities.
- Paste layers
This function allows to paste layers which were copied from another category
- Remove selected category
Users can remove the selected category from the Layer List. All the layers which are in a removed category are deleted
